Climbing 'Nachzügler' (6-) in the Gletscherseeplatten
The 'Gletscherseeplatten' in the Austrian Alps are a climber's paradise, renowned for their vast, perfectly sculpted granite slabs that rise dramatically above shimmering glacial lakes. Among the many classic lines here, the 'Nachzügler' route, graded 6-, stands out as a true gem, offering a delightful blend of engaging climbing and breathtaking alpine scenery.
Our adventure began with an early morning approach from the nearby hut, the crisp mountain air invigorating our senses as we hiked towards the base of the massive rock face. The route starts subtly, gradually leading into a series of immaculate, friction-heavy slabs. Grade 6- means it's challenging enough to demand attention and precise footwork, yet forgiving enough to allow you to truly soak in the stunning surroundings.
Each pitch of 'Nachzügler' unfolds beautifully. You find yourself dancing upwards on a canvas of rock, relying on delicate friction and the occasional positive hold or small crack for protection. The rock quality is superb – solid, grippy, and a joy to climb on. With every meter gained, the exposure intensifies, and the panorama widens to reveal a spectacular tapestry of jagged peaks, verdant valleys, and the mesmerizing turquoise of the Gletschersee below. There are sections that require thoughtful route-finding and calm execution, but the sensation of flowing smoothly upwards is incredibly rewarding.
Reaching the final anchors and topping out is always a moment of profound satisfaction. The views from the summit were simply unparalleled – a seemingly endless ocean of mountains bathed in sunlight, stretching to the horizon. After a well-deserved break to absorb the grandeur, the descent, typically involving a mix of rappels and easy scrambling, brought us safely back down. Climbing 'Nachzügler' isn't just about the moves; it's an immersive alpine experience, a symphony of movement, nature, and pure joy that leaves an indelible mark.
