Overview

Grade: 5

Our recent climbing adventure took us to the stunning Grüne Rettenwand to tackle the classic route 'Fegefeuer'. Graded a solid V (UIAA), it promised a rewarding challenge for its difficulty. The route ascends the characteristic limestone, offering varied climbing through slightly overhanging sections, enjoyable slabs, and exposed traverses. Each pitch provided its own unique set of challenges, demanding thoughtful movement and good technique. While never extremely difficult for its grade, the sustained nature and the exposure made it feel like a true alpine sport climbing experience. The rock quality was generally excellent, providing secure holds and reliable friction. From the top, the panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and peaks were simply breathtaking, a perfect reward for the effort. 'Fegefeuer' truly lives up to its reputation as a must-do climb at Grüne Rettenwand. It's a fantastic example of a well-bolted, engaging Grade V route that combines physical demand with incredible scenery. Highly recommended for climbers looking for a memorable day out.
