The 'Hochthron Südgrat' (South Ridge) is a classic and highly popular alpine scrambling and climbing route on the Hochthron mountain, typically graded II (UIAA). It serves as an excellent introduction to more technical alpine terrain, ideal for those transitioning from advanced hiking to basic rock climbing, or for experienced climbers seeking a scenic and less demanding day out. The route follows an exposed, yet generally straightforward ridge, offering continuous easy climbing and scrambling. While the technical difficulty is low (Grade II), the exposed nature and alpine environment necessitate sure-footedness, a good head for heights, and appropriate equipment, including a helmet, harness, and a short rope for safety (especially for short-roping or if conditions are less than ideal). The ascent provides breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Berchtesgaden Alps. After reaching the summit, the descent usually follows well-marked hiking trails.
