The Blechmauer ('Tin Wall') on the Rax plateau is a renowned climbing area, and 'Gelber Oktober' (Yellow October) is one of its testpiece routes. At a grade of 7+ (UIAA), it demands a solid technical ability and mental fortitude. Expect sustained climbing on often vertical, sometimes slightly overhanging, compact grey limestone. The route follows a logical line, utilizing pockets, crimps, and the occasional sidepull. Key sequences require precise footwork and body positioning to unlock. Due to the altitude and exposure, 'Gelber Oktober' can feel particularly challenging, especially when the wind picks up. A successful ascent requires not just physical strength but also confident route reading and the ability to manage your energy levels. The views from the wall, however, are spectacular, offering a rewarding panorama of the surrounding Rax Alps. This is a route that climbers often remember long after the last hold has been gripped.
