Climbing 'Zombieland' (grade 7-) in the Gutenstein Alps was an unforgettable experience. The approach itself offers stunning views of the surrounding Austrian limestone giants. 'Zombieland,' a fitting name, proved to be a test of endurance and technique. The lower half starts with some delicate slab moves, requiring precise footwork and a cool head. As you ascend, the route transitions into more sustained vertical climbing, characterized by small, technical crimps and occasional pockets, constantly demanding your attention and taxing your forearms. The crux, located about two-thirds of the way up, involves a tricky sequence over a slight overhang that feels relentless – true to its name, it feels like battling the walking dead until you finally make it through. Clipping the anchor after a hard-fought ascent brought a wave of relief and pure euphoria. The feeling of overcoming such a sustained and intricate route, surrounded by the serene beauty of the Gutenstein Alps, was incredibly rewarding. It's a fantastic climb that perfectly combines technical challenge with physical endurance.
