The Aeroplansteig on the Hohe Wand, graded 4- (UIAA), is a well-loved classic that offers a fantastic introduction to the exposed paths of this popular climbing and hiking area in Lower Austria. While officially graded as a rock climb, it's often experienced as an alpine scramble or an easy Klettersteig (via ferrata) due to its fixed ropes and ladders, making it accessible to climbers and experienced hikers with a good head for heights and sure-footedness.
Its name is derived from the distinctive 'Aeroplan-Leiter' (Airplane Ladder), a key feature along the ascent. The route provides breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Wienerwald and Schneeberg regions. It leads directly to the Hohe Wand plateau, from where numerous hiking trails branch off.
Proper equipment, including a helmet and potentially a via ferrata set for added security, is highly recommended. The ascent is rewarding, offering a blend of climbing sensation and stunning scenery. Descent is typically via one of the marked hiking paths from the plateau, such as the Springlessteig, bringing you safely back to the starting point.
