Climbing 'Bauchtumspfleger' (Grade 7-) on the Martinswand is an quintessential experience for any climber visiting the Innsbruck area. This multi-pitch sport route, set on the impressive limestone cliffs of the Martinswand, offers about 180 meters of sustained and varied climbing spread across five to six pitches. The grade of 7- (equivalent to French 6b) indicates a challenging but thoroughly enjoyable ascent, well-protected with bolts, making it a fantastic objective for experienced sport climbers.
The route is renowned for its exposed positions and superb views over the Inn Valley, often bathed in sunlight. Each pitch offers something unique, from technical slabs and vertical walls to the more challenging, slightly overhanging sections that define the 'Bauchtum' (belly button) character. The rock quality is generally excellent, providing solid holds and good friction. While not excessively strenuous, the sustained nature of the climbing requires good endurance.
Reaching the top feels incredibly rewarding, with breathtaking panoramic views. Descent is typically by rappelling the route, which is well-equipped with lower-offs. 'Bauchtumspfleger' stands out as a true Martinswand classic, combining physical challenge with spectacular scenery, leaving you with lasting memories of a fantastic day out.
