Overview

Grade: 5-

Climbing 'Knochenbeißer' (which translates roughly to 'Bone Biter') at Martinswand is a classic introduction to multi-pitch climbing in this popular Austrian crag. Graded at 5- (UIAA), it offers generally well-protected climbing on solid limestone. While not excessively difficult, the route presents a variety of interesting moves, including slabby sections, small overhangs, and vertical walls. Good footwork and efficient movement are key to conserving energy, especially on warmer days. The exposure is moderate, providing scenic views of the surrounding landscape. 'Knochenbeißer' is often crowded, particularly on weekends, so an early start is recommended. A standard rack of quickdraws and a 60-meter rope are sufficient for the climb. Descend via rappel (abseil) following the well-marked route. It's a rewarding climb for beginners transitioning from single-pitch to multi-pitch adventures, providing a great taste of the Martinswand experience.
