Our recent adventure took us to the majestic Steinplatte, a renowned climbing area straddling the border of Tyrol and Salzburg. Our target: the classic multi-pitch route 'Seilfrei', aptly named for its feeling of liberation on the rock, and graded 6 (UIAA). The approach itself hinted at the grandeur to come, with sweeping vistas opening up as we hiked towards the base of the wall. Roping up, there was that familiar mix of anticipation and focus. 'Seilfrei' immediately presented itself as a quintessential Steinplatte experience – solid limestone, often surprisingly textured despite its popularity, offering a mix of delicate slab climbing, more strenuous vertical sections, and intricate traverses. Each pitch unfolded beautifully. While a grade 6 might be considered moderate for some, 'Seilfrei' demanded attention and good technique, particularly in sections where the holds became smaller or the exposure more pronounced. The name 'Seilfrei' truly resonates as you move fluidly between bolts, feeling a sense of freedom and flow on the rock, well above the ground. The views over the valley and surrounding peaks were absolutely breathtaking, adding another layer of magic to every belay stance. Reaching the top, the satisfaction was immense. We savored the panoramic views, a well-earned reward after the concentration and effort. The descent, typically by abseil, provided a different perspective on the route we had just ascended. 'Seilfrei' on the Steinplatte is more than just a climb; it's an immersive journey into the heart of the mountains, a perfect blend of physical challenge, mental engagement, and unparalleled natural beauty. A truly memorable day on the rock!
