The "Der Johann Klettersteig" (also known as the Südwandklettersteig) on the Dachstein is a truly iconic and highly demanding via ferrata, graded D/E. Situated on the south face of the Hoher Dachstein in Austria, it offers an unforgettable alpine experience.
This klettersteig is renowned for its extreme exposure, immense length, and continuous technical challenges. It traverses steep rock faces and vertical sections, often featuring airy traverses and short ladders, all while offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Dachstein glacier and the surrounding Styrian and Upper Austrian Alps. The "Johann" demands not only significant arm strength and endurance but also considerable mental fortitude due to its sustained difficulty and immense exposure. It's a true test for even experienced via ferrata enthusiasts.
Climbers undertaking the Johann must possess excellent physical condition, be absolutely free from vertigo, and have extensive experience on demanding klettersteigs. Proper via ferrata equipment, including a helmet, harness, klettersteig set, and gloves, is essential, as is sufficient food, water, and awareness of rapidly changing alpine weather conditions. The route typically leads towards the vicinity of the Dachsteinwartehütte and the top station of the Dachstein Südwandbahn, from where descents are usually made via the cable car or further glacier routes.
