The Höllental Klettersteig on the Zugspitze is a classic and highly rewarding via ferrata, graded B/C, making it accessible to experienced beginners and intermediate climbers. It's not a standalone route but an integral part of the renowned ascent of Germany's highest peak via the Höllental valley. After traversing the stunning Höllental Gorge (Höllentalklamm) and the challenging scree fields of the Höllentalferner glacier (which requires caution and sometimes crampons early in the season), you reach the 'entrance' to the Klettersteig.
The Klettersteig itself begins with a thrilling, exposed section, often featuring vertical ladders and sturdy steel cables that provide security. While the B/C grading indicates it's moderately difficult, the exposure can be significant, demanding a good head for heights and sure-footedness. The route offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Wetterstein mountains and the vastness of the valley below. Climbers navigate along ledges, over small rock bands, and up various wired sections. This Klettersteig serves as the final, technical ascent before reaching the easier 'Wiesensteig' and eventually the summit of the Zugspitze. It's an unforgettable experience, combining alpine trekking with exhilarating rock climbing, culminating in panoramic vistas from the top of Germany.
