Climbing 'Pilastro Themis' on Parete San Paolo, part of Monte Colt in Arco, Italy, is a truly rewarding experience for multi-pitch enthusiasts. Graded 6+ (French sport grade, typically 6b to 6b+), this route offers sustained, enjoyable climbing on excellent limestone.
The 'Pilastro Themis' stands out for its fantastic rock quality, mostly solid and featured, with a good mix of technical slab climbing, crimps, and pockets. The route is generally well-bolted, characteristic of Arco's sport multi-pitches, making it a relatively safe and confidence-inspiring climb. It typically consists of 4-5 pitches, spanning approximately 150-180 meters of vertical gain.
The approach to the Parete San Paolo is relatively short and pleasant, usually taking about 15-20 minutes from the parking area through scenic olive groves. Being south-facing, the route basks in the sun, making it ideal for spring, autumn, and even sunny winter days, though it can be too hot in summer.
The climb itself offers breathtaking exposure, especially on the upper pitches, providing stunning panoramic views of the Sarca Valley, Arco Castle, and the shimmering Lake Garda in the distance. The moves are engaging and varied, requiring good footwork and stamina. The crux sections are challenging but fair for the grade.
Descent is usually by abseiling down the route or a nearby dedicated abseil line. A 60m single rope is sufficient, but double ropes or a 70m single offer more comfortable abseils. Overall, 'Pilastro Themis' is considered a classic in the area, highly recommended for its quality climbing, superb location, and unforgettable views.
