Climbing the Fontanesteig on Röthelstein (grade 3+) is a fantastic experience for beginner to intermediate climbers looking for a challenging yet accessible via ferrata. The route is located on the Röthelstein mountain, known for its reddish rock formations, which adds to the scenic beauty of the climb. Expect exposed sections, some steep rock, and plenty of iron ladders and cables to aid your ascent. While rated a 3+, there are some short sections that might feel a bit more challenging, especially for those new to via ferratas. A via ferrata set (harness, lanyard, and helmet) is mandatory. The views from the top are rewarding, offering panoramic vistas of the surrounding Austrian landscape. The Fontanesteig is generally well-maintained and a popular choice, so expect some company on weekends and holidays. Be sure to check the weather conditions before heading out and allow ample time for the ascent and descent.
