Climbing the "Sanduhr" (Hourglass) route in the Rofan Mountains is a classic alpine experience, though perhaps not overly long. Rated at a grade of 4+ (UIAA scale), it offers engaging climbing on solid rock with generally good protection. The route winds its way up a prominent hourglass-shaped feature, hence the name. Expect mostly slab and crack climbing, requiring a good mix of technique and endurance. While not extremely exposed, the alpine environment demands respect and careful planning. A clear weather window is essential, and proper gear, including a helmet, climbing shoes, harness, rope, and sufficient quickdraws, is a must. The views from the Rofan are breathtaking, making the effort well worthwhile.
