Climbing the 'Schaufelwand Ostgrat' (East Ridge) on the majestic Schaufelwand is a truly classic alpine experience. The adventure typically begins with an early start, traversing picturesque alpine meadows, perhaps from a nearby hut, towards the impressive base of the Schaufelwand. The Ostgrat, graded 3+, offers delightful and varied climbing. It's characterized by solid rock, often with good friction, and a mix of exhilarating scrambling sections and more sustained climbing pitches. While not overly technical, the exposure on the ridge provides a constant thrill. You'll navigate interesting slabby sections, short vertical steps, and traverse airy passages. The protection is generally good, often with natural placements for traditional gear, and sometimes supplemented by fixed anchors or bolts where necessary. Throughout the ascent, the panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys are simply breathtaking, evolving with every meter gained. Reaching the summit is incredibly rewarding, offering 360-degree vistas that make all the effort worthwhile. The descent usually follows a well-marked normal route, which might involve some easy scrambling or down-climbing before transitioning into a hiking path back to the starting point, completing a memorable day in the mountains.
