The 'Platten - Diagonale' on Tschirgant is one of those routes that perfectly encapsulates alpine slab climbing. Graded 6+ (UIAA), it's a true test of balance, precise footwork, and mental fortitude. From the moment you start the approach, the imposing north face of Tschirgant draws you in. The air is crisp, the views already stunning.
The climbing itself is a ballet on rock. Long, sustained pitches of beautiful limestone slabs, often surprisingly steep for their angle, demand constant attention. The 'diagonal' nature of the route means exhilarating traverses, with hundreds of meters of air beneath your heels. There's often a particular section, perhaps a smooth, featureless slab, where you rely purely on friction and faith, delicately placing your feet and trusting the rock. Protection can sometimes feel sparse, adding to the psychological aspect.
Reaching the top of each pitch, belaying from a tiny ledge with the vast Alpine panorama unfolding around you, is a reward in itself. The views of the Inn Valley and surrounding peaks are breathtaking. Topping out on the Tschirgant summit after completing the 'Platten - Diagonale' brings an immense sense of accomplishment. The descent, whether by abseil or a careful walk-off, allows time to reflect on the challenging yet incredibly rewarding experience. It's a classic for a reason – a truly memorable slab masterpiece.
