The Panorama-Klettersteig (grade C/D) truly lives up to its name, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Zillertal valley and surrounding peaks. Located near Mayrhofen, Austria, this via ferrata is a demanding yet incredibly rewarding experience.
The approach starts with a pleasant walk, gradually leading to the base of the rock face. The climb itself begins with some easier sections, allowing you to get accustomed, before quickly escalating in difficulty. Expect sustained vertical ascents, exposed traverses, and sections that require good upper body strength and foot technique. The C/D grading indicates challenging passages, often involving longer vertical stretches with limited natural footholds, relying heavily on the fixed steel ropes and artificial steps (pins, clamps).
What truly sets it apart are the incredible vistas that unfold with every meter gained. You're constantly rewarded with expansive views, making every strenuous move worthwhile. The rock is generally grippy, and the ironware is well-maintained, but the exposure is significant, requiring a good head for heights.
Upon reaching the top, a sense of immense accomplishment washes over you, combined with even more spectacular views. The return typically involves a well-marked hiking trail, often steep in sections, leading back down through the forest to the valley floor or connecting to other trails. This descent allows for a more relaxed contemplation of the stunning scenery you just climbed through. It's an unforgettable adventure for experienced via ferrata climbers seeking a thrill with a view.
