Tristans Kirchbogensteig / Klettersteig Spielmäuer is a captivating via ferrata rated C, situated in the breathtaking Gesäuse National Park in Styria, Austria. This moderately difficult route is renowned for its dramatic exposure and, most notably, for leading directly to the stunning natural rock arch known as the 'Kirchbogen' (Church Arch).
Climbing Tristans Kirchbogensteig offers a thrilling experience. The ascent features a mix of steep sections, traverses, and ladder climbs, all meticulously secured with steel cables and iron pegs. While graded C, meaning it's suitable for experienced via ferrata climbers with a good head for heights, some passages can feel quite airy, providing exhilarating views of the surrounding rugged peaks of the Gesäuse.
The highlight is undoubtedly the traverse towards and through the magnificent Kirchbogen itself, which feels like stepping into a natural cathedral high above the valley. The panoramic vistas from various points along the route are simply spectacular, making every effort worthwhile. Proper via ferrata equipment (helmet, harness, via ferrata set) is essential. The descent typically follows a marked path, completing a memorable mountain adventure.
