Climbing gyms in Salzburg

2 gyms

The state of Salzburg lies in the heart of the Northern Limestone Alps, and almost all its climbing is on limestone. The Berchtesgaden Alps along the Bavarian border – with massifs such as the Hochkönig, Steinernes Meer and Untersberg – offer long alpine routes, while the Tennengebirge south of Golling holds both alpine faces and popular sport crags such as Pass Lueg in the Salzach gorge, the Kleiner Pass Lueg and the crag by the Laufener Hütte. Along the western edge, the Loferer and Leoganger Steinberge – with more than 1,000 sport routes, including the 45-pitch "Pinzgawurm" – are one of Austria's top limestone areas.

The Salzach valley motorway and railway between Salzburg, Hallein and Werfen give quick access to most crags. Lower valley crags are climbable from spring to autumn, while the high plateaus and alpine faces are mainly done from June to September.
