The Lienz Dolomites south of Lienz in East Tyrol – part of the Gailtal Alps – are a wild jumble of towers and walls of grippy limestone, especially popular with alpinists. Climbing reaches international top level around the Karlsbader Hütte (2,260 m) and the Dolomitenhütte (1,616 m): "Another Play in Paradise" was chosen by an expert jury as one of the five "Great Lines" of all Tyrol, and the compact rock of the Kleine Laserzwand carries demanding routes such as "24er" (VII+). There are easier classics too – the Egerländer Kante, the Schmittkamin on the Roter Turm and the Bügeleisenkante (3+, 11 pitches), a favourite introduction to alpine climbing – while the needle on the Laserzwand west ridge is popular for its rock and short approach.
From Lienz drive via Tristach towards the Tristacher See and take the toll road to the Dolomitenhütte car park; the Karlsbader Hütte, with overnight stays, is the base for the Laserz walls. The season runs from July to October.
