Peilstein in the Vienna Woods is the classic crag of Viennese climbers and has been climbed for generations. Its limestone, known for being particularly smooth, forms walls up to 120 m high spread over around 25 sectors with several hundred routes – from easy beginner lines to grade 11-. The protection is very good, with lower-off anchors on almost every route, which makes Peilstein popular for courses and families; there is also a short, easy via ferrata. A renovation in recent years added new routes and rebolted old ones.
The walls face northwest and get sun only from midday, so it is pleasant in summer but too cold in winter and unpleasant in strong west or north wind. Access is from the large gravel car park at Holzschlag (about 10 minutes' walk) or from Schwarzensee (about 20 minutes more), reached via Raisenmarkt. The Peilsteinhaus hut stands above the crag.
Part of Vienna Woods, Peilstein has 72 routes documented on climbing.place. Routes range from grade 3+ to 11-. Routes are listed below with grade, style, and community notes.
Often climbed in May, June, July.
