The Salzkammergut Mountains around the lakes of the Salzkammergut – Wolfgangsee, Mondsee, Attersee and Traunsee – combine limestone climbing with some of Austria's finest lake scenery. Most crags are compact limestone walls close to the shores and villages, among them the popular Plombergstein and Bürgelstein, the Predigstuhl, the Zwerchwand, the Wilhelmswand, the Hoher Rosenkogel, the Brunnkogel and the Falkenstein. They range from short sport routes for families to longer multi-pitch lines, and the Gosau area with the Gosaukamm towers lies just to the south.
Many crags are only a few minutes from the road, so a climbing day combines easily with a swim in one of the lakes. Thanks to their moderate altitude, most sectors are climbable from spring to autumn. In summer, traffic and parking around the lakes can be busy at weekends.
