The Upper Austrian Prealps stretch from the Traunsee east across the Steyr and Enns valleys – a hilly limestone landscape with many small and mid-sized crags. In the west, the Traunstein (1,691 m) rises straight out of the Traunsee above Gmunden and carries classic ridge routes such as the Gmundnerweg. Further east, between Steyr and Weyer, the Enns valley has a dense network of crags, for example the Kreuzmauer near Trattenbach (Ternberg): compact slab limestone with 12 routes of 20–100 m on three towers, grades 4 to 8, demanding edge, friction and crack climbing. Many other sectors in the range – from beginner walls to steep sport crags – hold mostly single-pitch routes in the 5th to 8th grade.
The Ennstal crags are reachable by the Ennstalbahn with stations at Ternberg and Trattenbach, and by car about 15 minutes from Ternberg; parking at the Gasthof Klausriegler is refunded with a purchase. The usual season is May to October, though the lower crags are often dry from spring.
