The Vogelberg (546 m) rises directly above the town of Dürnstein in the Wachau and is often called the best crag in the region – climbers enjoy views of the Danube and the ruined castle of Dürnstein, though traffic noise from the valley carries up. The rock is gneiss; the main wall, the Nasenwand, is 10–60 m high, faces southwest and is very well bolted after a thorough re-equipping. Most routes are 6+ to 9, with sectors such as Nick-Neck, Yogafaszination, Nihilismus and Buchmannverschneidung, plus the five-pitch Bergrettungsweg and the classic Wachauer Grat for alpine-style days.
Park west of Dürnstein (car park P8) or in the town, cross the railway and walk about 15 minutes up the Kummerstal. Spring and autumn are best; in summer the southwest-facing wall gets very hot, so climb before about 1 pm. Some routes have large hollow blocks and parts of the wall base are a narrow ledge, so the crag is not suitable for small children.
Part of Wachau / Waldviertel, Vogelberg has 85 routes documented on climbing.place. Routes range from grade 4- to 10-. Explore its 7 crags and sectors below.
Often climbed in April, May, June.
