The 'Südwestkante' (Southwest Ridge) of the Aggenstein is a popular and rewarding alpine scramble (UIAA grade 3+) in the Allgäu Alps. It's a fantastic introduction to alpine climbing, offering stunning panoramic views and exposure, while remaining relatively accessible for climbers with some experience.
The route generally involves exposed scrambling and easy climbing along the southwest ridge. Some sections require the use of hands and feet for balance and progress. Protection is sparse, and most parties will bring a small rack of cams and quickdraws to supplement the existing fixed protection (bolts). Route finding can be tricky in places, so a good topo (route map) is essential.
While the grade is moderate, the alpine environment demands respect. Weather can change rapidly, and good fitness and a head for heights are essential. The descent is typically down the 'Normalweg' (Normal Route), which involves some scrambling and scree.
