The Ausweichkogel, a name that somehow hints at a lesser-known but equally captivating destination, is home to one of my favorite Grade 6 sport routes: "Houston, Hörnchen has landed!". The name itself promises a cosmic journey, and the climb delivers. From the initial holds, a sense of anticipation builds. The lower section lulls you into a rhythm, offering solid but thought-provoking moves as you ascend. Then comes the crux, the section that truly earns its space-themed moniker. It's a delicate dance of power and precision. "Houston" demands a committed reach, a long stretch for a barely-there crimp or a distant pocket. And once you've committed, comes the "Hörnchen" – a precise, almost fragile foothold or a small horn of rock that requires perfect balance and trust. Nailing that "landing" feels like sticking a gymnast's dismount. Above the crux, the route continues with sustained climbing, offering breathtaking exposure and sweeping views of the valley below. The rock is generally excellent, inviting confident movement. Reaching the anchors, there's a profound sense of satisfaction – a successful mission accomplished. "Houston, Hörnchen has landed!" isn't just a climb; it's a memorable adventure that combines strength, finesse, and a touch of the extraordinary.
