Climbing the "Gänsekragen Ostgrat" (East Ridge) is a classic alpine outing on the Gänsekragen massif. Rated at 3+/4- (UIAA), it offers enjoyable climbing on solid rock with stunning views. The route is typically ascended as a day trip and requires a good level of fitness and alpine experience. Expect exposed traverses, steep sections of scrambling and some short rock climbing pitches. While the grade is moderate, route finding can be challenging, especially without a guidebook or prior knowledge. Protection is generally good with opportunities for placing gear, but some sections may be runout. Be prepared for variable weather conditions as mountain weather can change rapidly. Essential gear includes: climbing shoes, harness, helmet, rope (at least 50m), a rack of quickdraws, slings, and personal protection. Proper alpine skills, including belaying, rappelling, and crevasse rescue knowledge (depending on snow conditions), are crucial for a safe and successful ascent. Remember to check the local weather forecast and avalanche report before heading out.
