Ascending 'Freier als Paul Preuß' (grade 7) on the Great Bratschenkopf's Wetterwand south wall was an utterly profound experience. This route, whose name itself is a homage to the pioneering spirit of Paul Preuß and his radical 'free' climbing ethos, offers genuinely committing and exposed pitches. The grade 7 feels every bit of its challenge, demanding precise movement and unwavering focus on the excellent limestone. Each meter gained unfolds increasingly breathtaking vistas across the majestic Wetterstein mountain range. Reaching the summit, after navigating its intricate cruxes and enjoying its sustained verticality, was incredibly rewarding – a true embrace of alpine free climbing. The descent, typically involving a combination of abseiling and walking, provided a peaceful moment to reflect on the immensity and beauty of the accomplished climb.
