Our climb of 'Alte Neue' (grade 6+) in the picturesque Gutenstein Alps was a truly memorable experience. The approach through the lush forest, with the distinctive grey limestone walls appearing through the trees, built anticipation. From the moment we tied in, the route offered engaging and varied climbing. The characteristic limestone provided excellent friction, adorned with pockets, crimps, and small edges that demanded precise footwork. Each pitch brought its own challenge, from sustained vertical sections to a slightly exposed slab that required careful balance. The 6+ grade felt just right – challenging enough to keep us focused, but never desperate. The protection was solid, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the climbing. Reaching the top, we were rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys – a perfect culmination of the effort. The descent via a series of swift abseils brought us back to the base, filled with the satisfaction of a great day out. 'Alte Neue' is a classic for a reason, offering a fantastic blend of moderate challenge and stunning alpine scenery. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a superb limestone experience in this region.
