Climbing 'Droogie Boys' (Grade 7) in the Gutenstein Alps is an experience that lingers. The Gutenstein Alps, with their characteristic limestone faces, offer a stunning backdrop for such a challenging route. We started early, the crisp alpine air invigorating our senses as we approached the base. The first pitches of 'Droogie Boys' immediately demanded respect, with intricate moves on solid, sharp rock. The exposure grew with each meter gained, revealing increasingly panoramic views of the rolling green foothills and distant peaks. A particular slab section around mid-route provided a memorable crux, requiring delicate balance and precise footwork, truly testing our nerve and technique. The rock quality throughout was exceptional, offering reliable holds and friction. Reaching the summit after several hours of sustained effort was an immense triumph, a moment of profound satisfaction as we took in the vast Austrian landscape. The descent, a mix of down-climbing and rappels, was just as engaging, requiring focus until we were safely back on the valley floor. Tired but deeply exhilarated, 'Droogie Boys' left us with an unforgettable sense of accomplishment and the desire to return to these magnificent mountains.
