Climbing the 'Emporverscheidng' (Grade 5) in the Gutenstein Alps was a truly rewarding experience. We started our day with a scenic drive into the heart of the Gutensteiner Alpen, followed by a pleasant approach hike through dense forest and then across a scree slope, leading us to the imposing limestone face.
The 'Emporverscheidng' lives up to its classic status. The route, graded 5 (UIAA), offers a delightful mix of technical slabs, exposed traverses, and engaging crack climbing. The limestone is generally solid, providing excellent friction, though one needs to stay attentive to loose rock in places, typical for alpine limestone. Each of the pitches presented its own unique challenges, from delicate balance moves to more strenuous pulls on good holds. The exposure gradually built, and the views back towards the valleys and surrounding peaks were breathtaking, especially as we gained height. The protection, a mix of older bolts and opportunities for natural placements, felt adequate, adding to the adventurous feel.
Reaching the top was a moment of pure satisfaction, soaking in the panoramic vistas. The descent was straightforward, involving a pleasant walk-off down a marked trail, leading us back to our starting point. The 'Emporverscheidng' is a perfect choice for intermediate climbers looking for a classic route that combines technical challenge with an authentic alpine atmosphere without being overly committing.
