The Southwest Ridge (Südwestgrat) of Kleiner Buchstein is a fantastic climb, offering exposed and enjoyable scrambling with a maximum difficulty of 3- (UIAA). The rock is generally solid limestone, providing good friction. The route is relatively short, but the views are stunning, encompassing the surrounding Ennstal Alps. Expect some airy traverses and straightforward climbing sections. Route finding is generally intuitive, but a topo is recommended, especially for less experienced climbers. While not technically demanding, the exposed nature of the ridge and the need for confident movement make it a worthwhile experience for climbers comfortable at this grade. Remember to bring appropriate gear including a helmet, harness, and possibly some slings and quickdraws for placing protection on more difficult sections. Consider the weather conditions as the route can become more challenging in wet or icy conditions.
