Climbing "Linke Achsel - Kofelturm - Kofel" on the Kofel is a classic Bavarian experience. This route, graded 4- (UIAA), offers a fantastic introduction to alpine climbing, characterized by its exposed position and stunning views over Oberammergau.
The climb typically involves scrambling up rocky ledges, negotiating short but potentially airy traverses, and a few sections where the hands are definitely needed. While the technical difficulty is relatively low, the exposure should not be underestimated. Some sections might feel quite exposed, especially for those new to alpine terrain. Good footwork and a calm head are essential.
The "Linke Achsel" (Left Armpit) refers to a distinct feature near the start of the route. From there, the route leads to the Kofelturm (Kofel Tower) before culminating on the summit of the Kofel itself. Expect a mix of rock types, requiring careful placement of your feet.
This is a popular route, so be prepared for possible crowds, especially on weekends. Starting early is recommended to avoid queues and have the best possible experience. Make sure you have the necessary equipment: good climbing shoes, a rope (although often climbed without), and ideally some slings and carabiners for securing yourself at exposed points. And don't forget your camera - the views from the top are simply breathtaking!
