The Krobath-Metzger-Korspitze Nordkante, often simply known as Krobath-Metzger, is a classic Grade V (UIAA) rock climb on the Korspitze (Cima del Vallone, Trbiška Krniška špica) in the Julian Alps. This historic route ascends the prominent north ridge, offering exposed climbing on solid, mostly gray limestone. It's renowned for its sustained difficulties, logical line, and spectacular views across the surrounding peaks.
Climbers can expect a series of engaging pitches, often airy, requiring good technique and route-finding skills. The cruxes are well-protected but demand respect. The exposure on the ridge is exhilarating, with steep drops on either side. Reaching the summit of Korspitze after the sustained efforts of the Krobath-Metzger is incredibly rewarding, offering panoramic vistas that stretch far into Italy, Austria, and Slovenia.
The descent typically involves a combination of rappels down a less exposed face and then scrambling or walking down a gully/ridge, requiring careful navigation and often a headlamp if the day runs long. It's a full-day alpine adventure, demanding not just climbing ability but also endurance, good weather assessment, and self-reliance. A true classic for those seeking a challenging and memorable experience in the Eastern Alps.
