Conquering the 'Qixin King of Speed' (7-) in the heart of the Lake Garda Mountains was an experience that truly lived up to its name – a challenge of precision, power, and, indeed, speed. The name itself, 'King of Speed,' hinted at a route designed for efficiency, yet its 7- grade promised anything but a casual ascent.
The early morning crisp air set the perfect tone for our climb. The initial pitches offered a fantastic warm-up, a dance on solid rock, building a rhythm. Then, the true test arrived with the crux pitches. The 7- section was a masterful blend of technical slab, delicate crimps, and sustained verticality. Each move demanded absolute precision – a delicate smear here, a powerful pull there, all while maintaining perfect balance. Forearms burned, breath came in sharp gasps, but the panoramic views of Lake Garda unfurling beneath us provided a stunning backdrop, pushing us onward.
Topping out was pure elation. The sense of accomplishment, having navigated such a demanding and exposed line, was immense. The descent, a series of quick rappels, was a blur. Later, with a well-deserved pasta and a cold beer, we replayed the crux moves, a satisfied smile on our faces. 'Qixin King of Speed' is not just a climb; it's a testament to the beauty and challenge of the Garda region.
