Climbing 'Plattenflucht' on the Große Laserzwand (Large Laserzwand), graded 7- (UIAA), is a true alpine classic and a quintessential experience in the Lienz Dolomites. The route name itself, 'Slab Escape' or 'Slab Flight,' perfectly encapsulates the nature of the climb: a sustained ascent primarily over immaculate, friction-dependent limestone slabs. Each of its numerous pitches unfolds with breathtaking exposure and ever-expanding panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys, a reward that steadily grows with every meter gained.
While the 7- grade might not sound extreme in modern sport climbing terms, in an alpine context, it signifies a serious undertaking. The 'Plattenflucht' demands excellent endurance, precise footwork, and confident lead climbing on run-outs between sparse, yet often well-placed, bolts or traditional gear placements. Route-finding, though generally clear on such a classic, still requires attention. Reaching the summit of the Große Laserzwand after overcoming the elegant line of the 'Plattenflucht' is incredibly rewarding. The sense of accomplishment, combined with the vastness of the alpine landscape stretching to the horizon, makes this an unforgettable multi-pitch adventure and a testament to the beauty and challenge of traditional alpine climbing.
