The Rax-Schneeberg Group, with its dramatic limestone faces, is a quintessential Austrian climbing destination. Our target was 'Kristallklarer Herbsttag,' a classic Grade 6 (UIAA) route that truly lives up to its name. On a truly crystal-clear autumn day, the air was crisp, and the sun illuminated the vibrant larch and beech forests below. The approach itself, leading to the base of the imposing wall, offered breathtaking panoramic views, hinting at the grandeur to come.
The climb began with engaging slabs, demanding precise footwork on the grippy limestone. As we ascended, the route transitioned into more varied terrain – a mix of delicate cracks, short, exposed traverses, and occasional steeper sections that tested our strength and nerve. Each pitch offered unique challenges, from searching for hidden holds to navigating airy positions with nothing but hundreds of meters of space below. The protection was generally good, though some run-outs added to the alpine feel.
Reaching the summit, the reward was immense. A 360-degree panorama unfolded: the rolling hills of Styria, the distinct peaks of the Schneeberg, and the vast expanse of the Rax plateau. The sense of accomplishment, combined with the sheer beauty of the autumnal landscape bathed in golden light, made 'Kristallklarer Herbsttag' an unforgettable experience – a perfect blend of challenging climbing and natural splendor.
