Erikasteig, nestled in the Vienna Woods, offers a surprisingly challenging and rewarding climbing experience just outside the Austrian capital. Graded 3+/4- (UIAA), this via ferrata is perfect for experienced hikers looking to transition into easy climbing or for climbers wanting a quick, scenic ascent. The route features a mix of exposed rock scrambles, short vertical sections aided by iron rungs and cables, and delightful forest trails connecting the climbing segments. The views from the top are spectacular, showcasing the rolling hills of the Vienna Woods and glimpses of the city beyond. While not overly difficult, Erikasteig requires good footwear, a head for heights, and a basic understanding of via ferrata techniques. The descent is a relatively straightforward hike, allowing for a relaxed reflection on the small but satisfying accomplishment of conquering the Erikasteig. Remember to check weather conditions beforehand, as wet rock can significantly increase the difficulty. All in all, Erikasteig provides a fantastic, accessible climbing experience close to Vienna.
