Sandplatte

Climbing the 'Sandplatte' (grade 5+) in the Vienna Woods is a unique experience. Unlike the alpine climbing you might expect, this is more of a bouldering-esque challenge on sandstone. The rock is generally quite solid but can be polished in places, especially on popular routes. The climbing style is often technical and demanding, requiring precise footwork and body positioning. Expect small crimps, slopers, and the occasional pocket. Protection is sparse, so a good head and solid technique are essential. The setting is beautiful, surrounded by lush forest, and offers a refreshing contrast to the city. While not the most sustained climbing, the Sandplatte demands respect and provides a rewarding day out for climbers comfortable with the grade.
