The Karawanks form the long limestone wall along the border between Carinthia and Slovenia, with the Bachergebirge (Pohorje) further east. One of their most striking sections is the Koschuta, a ridge about 15 km long whose steep walls rise above the mountaineering village of Zell-Sele; its Koschutnikturm carries climbing routes and, since autumn 2006, a re-equipped ÖTK via ferrata (B/C) with a suspension bridge, a round trip of about 3.5 to 4 hours. Other summits in the range with rock routes include the Klagenfurter Spitze, the Tolsta, the Lärchenberg and the Mittagskogel.
The Karawanks are reached from Klagenfurt and the Rosental, with mountaineering villages such as Zell-Sele as quiet bases. As a border range, they combine alpine terrain with a southern climate, and most routes are climbed from late spring to autumn; on the longer walls, loose rock and changing weather call for alpine experience.
