French climber Jules Marchaland has climbed Change P1 (9a+) in the Flatanger cave in Norway. It's the first pitch of Adam Ondra's Change. He sent it a week after his first ascent of King Kang (9b+) on the same wall.
He needed about eight sessions. He was close on his third try but fell just before the jugs, and after that nothing went well for a while. The send came on his last day, in a heavy storm.
He found the crux awkward. He calls it "contortionist moves": you rotate around a knee and twist in every direction to get out of the position. With poor hip mobility, unlocking the sequence took him a long time, and his knees paid for it.
Next he's going home to Grenoble to train, with short trips to Ramirole and Céüse. Then he plans to rest before Spain in December, and maybe some bouldering in Ticino.
Change P1 has seen several ascents lately. Read about Gianluca Vighetti's send and Marchaland's King Kang FA.
