The Obergailtal bouldering area is a relatively new boulder field high above the village of Obergail (1,094 m) in the upper Gail valley, near the Obergailer Alm. Blocks 1 to 6 m high are scattered across alpine meadows and face in many directions from north to south, with problems of all difficulties and plenty of potential for new lines; the areas are named after features such as the Wiese and the Kühlschrank.
Drive past Obergail on the gravel road to the "Bienentankstelle" car park (1,160 m); the barrier key for driving on to the Hundstrichsee junction is available at the Hepi Lodge. On foot, follow trail 443 towards the Enderberghütte to the Hundstrichsee junction and then head south to the first blocks – about 1.5 hours, with the boulders at around 1,600 m. The Hepi Lodge is a good base and hosts an annual bouldering festival. The area is family-friendly; bring a crash pad. Thanks to the altitude, summer is the main season.
