The Rofan Mountains rise steeply above the eastern shore of the Achensee, with the long Guffert range further north-east towards the Bavarian border. The rock is limestone, and the range is popular for its mix of short sport climbing and alpine multi-pitch routes. A highlight is the Grauwand at around 1,600 m above the Achensee, a south-facing crag of excellent limestone that was fully renovated in 2021: 37 routes up to 30 m long, from 5c to 8a, most of them in the 6th and 7th grade. The Guffert offers longer alpine routes on its north, south and south-west faces, and the Hochiss and Klobenjoch complete the picture.
The Grauwand is reached with the Rofan cable car from Maurach am Achensee, which runs until 1 November, followed by a fairly long walk-in; the Guffert routes start from Steinberg am Rofan. The south-facing walls are pleasant from late spring into autumn, when the area is especially beautiful.
