Rope Length: 50m

Climbing 'Metalhead' (6-) in the Gutenstein Alps is a truly rewarding experience. This moderate yet engaging route offers a fantastic day out in a picturesque part of Lower Austria.

The adventure begins with a pleasant approach through verdant forests, steadily gaining elevation towards the imposing limestone cliffs. The air is crisp, and the anticipation builds with every step. Upon reaching the base of 'Metalhead', you're greeted by a clean, well-bolted line ascending a prominent feature. The grade of 6- (UIAA) makes it accessible for competent climbers, yet provides enough challenge to keep you focused.

The climbing itself is characteristic of the Gutenstein limestone – excellent friction, varied holds ranging from small crimps to generous pockets, and often some steep, airy sections that really get the heart pumping. Each pitch unfolds beautifully, offering new perspectives on the surrounding valleys and the distant peaks. The exposure on the upper sections is exhilarating, but the solid bolting inspires confidence. Reaching the top, the views are breathtaking, a panorama of rolling hills, deep forests, and the distinctive Austrian landscape.

The descent, typically via rappel, allows for a different appreciation of the route's scale and the surrounding natural beauty. Returning to the valley floor, there's a profound sense of accomplishment and the satisfaction of having navigated a classic line in a stunning alpine environment. 'Metalhead' is more than just a climb; it's an immersion into the serene grandeur of the Gutenstein Alps.
