The Pfaffenstein Westgrat (West Ridge) is a classic Grade III climb located on the iconic Pfaffenstein mountain in Saxon Switzerland, Germany. This route is more of an exposed scramble and ridge traverse than a highly technical rock climb, making it a fantastic introduction to climbing in the region or a relaxed option for experienced climbers. The Westgrat follows a distinct ridge line, offering continuous exposure and increasingly impressive views as you ascend. While graded Grade III (UIAA scale, indicating easy climbing with hands often needed for balance and some steeper sections), it's generally considered accessible for those comfortable with heights and basic scrambling techniques. There are a few short, steeper sections where hands are definitely needed, but no truly difficult individual moves. The climb provides a real sense of adventure, leading directly to the summit plateau of Pfaffenstein, where you're rewarded with breathtaking panoramic vistas of the surrounding Elbe Sandstone Mountains, Königstein Fortress, and the Lilienstein. It's a highly popular and enjoyable route, often done unroped by confident scramblers, though a rope and basic protection can be useful for beginners or added security. The descent is typically via the normal walking paths or ladders/stairs on other sides of the mountain, making for a straightforward return to the base.
