Climbing 'Opa's letzter Röchler' (Grandpa's Last Gasp) in the impressive Westwand was an experience I won't soon forget. Rated at 7- (UIAA scale), it's a route that demands respect. While not an extreme grade, it's sustained and deceptively tricky, truly living up to its evocative name. The rock quality on the Westwand is generally superb, offering a mix of technical crimps, delicate slabs, and a few powerful sections. Each pitch presented its own unique puzzle. The exposure grew with every meter, offering breathtaking panoramic views as we ascended. The true character of 'Opa's letzter Röchler' became apparent on the final pitches. Just when you think you're through the worst, a series of sustained moves truly tested my endurance. It felt like a proper 'last gasp' – you had to dig deep for that final push. Reaching the anchors, pumped but exhilarated, was incredibly satisfying. The panoramic vista from the top of the Westwand, after conquering such a fittingly named route, was the perfect reward. It's a fantastic climb, a true classic for its grade, and a testament to the routesetters who found such a challenging yet enjoyable line.
