The decision to tackle 'Dust Rider' (grade VI UIAA) in the majestic Wetterstein Mountains and Mieminger Chain was met with a mix of excitement and healthy trepidation. Known for its exposed pitches on pristine limestone, this route promised a true alpine adventure. We set off early, under a crisp, clear morning sky, the 'alpine start' living up to its name. The approach, though scenic, was a good warm-up for what was to come. Each of the pitches presented its unique puzzle: delicate slabs demanding precise footwork, powerful cracks, and airy traverses that offered breathtaking views down into the valley and across to the sprawling Mieminger Chain. The rock, typical Wetterstein limestone, provided surprising friction but demanded unwavering focus. The crux pitch, a sustained and technical section, tested our nerves and technique, but the exhilaration of moving through such a grand landscape overshadowed any discomfort. Reaching the summit, the sense of accomplishment was profound, a reward for the physical and mental effort. The long descent allowed us to reflect on an unforgettable day, reaffirming 'Dust Rider' as a true gem in this stunning mountain range.
