The crisp morning air, the weight of the rack, the distant silhouette of the Wetterstein peaks – a familiar thrill before tackling 'Wild Iris'. Graded a challenging 6 (UIAA), its reputation for exposed pitches and intricate climbing was well-known. The first pitches were steep, demanding precise footwork on the characteristic limestone. Higher up, the exposure became palpable, offering breathtaking views that stretched across the Wetterstein Mountains and Mieminger Chain, a vast sea of jagged peaks and deep valleys. The 'crux' pitch was a true test of nerve and technique, a delicate traverse followed by powerful moves on surprisingly small holds, pushing us to our limits. With each meter gained, the world expanded below, revealing more of the alpine grandeur. Reaching the top was a flood of relief and exhilaration, a moment to truly savor the silence and the boundless panorama. The descent, though long and requiring careful attention, was filled with the afterglow of a challenging and immensely rewarding ascent. 'Wild Iris' isn't just a route; it's an experience that carves itself into memory, a testament to the raw beauty and demanding nature of this magnificent mountain range.
