The Rax and Schneeberg are Vienna's "home mountains", the easternmost high massifs of the Northern Limestone Alps. Between them lies the deep Höllental gorge, one of the most traditional climbing areas in Austria with well over 2,000 routes of all grades – from sport crags to long, mostly traditional multi-pitch routes on walls such as the Stadelwand, the Blechmauer, the Gaisbauerwand, the Grossofen or the Preinerwand. Classics include the Richterweg on the Stadelwand (5-, 300 m, first climbed in 1914), the Blechmauernverschneidung (6, 220 m, 1930) and Daham is Daham (7+, 500 m), one of the longest climbs in the area; on the Rax plateau there are also popular via ferratas.
From Vienna take the A2 and S6 towards Semmering (exit Gloggnitz); from the west the A1 to St. Pölten and on towards Schwarzau im Gebirge. The legendary base for Viennese climbers is the Weichtalhaus in the Höllental; there is food at Kaiserbrunn. Sunny autumn days, when the mixed forest turns colourful, are a highlight.
Part of Lower Austria, Rax-Schneeberg Group has 27 via ferrata routes documented on climbing.place. Routes are listed below with difficulty and community notes.
