Lower Austria, surrounding Vienna, is the historic home of Viennese climbing and one of the busiest climbing regions in Austria. The Hohe Wand, a limestone plateau with walls up to around 150 m, is the biggest area, with hundreds of sport and trad routes; the Peilstein in the Vienna Woods is a classic training crag of compact limestone with routes from beginner to top grades. South-west of Vienna, the Rax and Schneeberg with the Höllental gorge offer longer limestone routes and plenty of alpine history, while in the Wachau the gneiss and crystalline crags above the Danube, such as the Hoher Stein and the Vogelberg near Dürnstein, combine climbing with vineyard scenery.
Most areas are within an hour or so of Vienna by car, many also by train and bus. Thanks to their low altitude, the crags are best in spring and autumn; summer can be hot on the sunny walls, and some sectors have bird-protection closures in spring.
